IT IS THE INTERCONNECTION BETWEEN SIMILAR OR RELATED TEXTS THAT REFLECT AND INFLUENCE AN AUDIENCE'S INTERPRETATION OF THE TEXT. THE THREE TYPES OF INTERTEXTUALITY ARE OBLIGATORY, OPTIONAL, AND ACCIDENTAL. OBLIGATORY INTERTEXTUALITY IN WHEN THE WRITER PURPOSELY CREATES A COMPARISON OR ASSOCIATION BETWEEN TWO OR MORE TEXTS. OPTIONAL INTERTEXTUALITY MEANS IT IS POSSIBLE TO FIND A CONNECTION TO MULTIPLE TEXTS OF A SINGLE PHRASE, OR NO CONNECTION AT ALL. LASTLY, ACCIDENTAL INTERTEXTUALITY IS WHEN READERS OFTEN CONNECT A TEXT WITH ANOTHER TEXT, CULTURAL PRACTICE OR A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, WITHOUT THERE BEING ANY TANGIBLE REFERENCE WITHIN THE ORIGINAL TEXT. Examples: This example of intertextuality shows The Simpsons referencing the Space Odyssey movie as shown in the bottom left corner of the image. Another example of intertextuality would be the reference of Bob Ross in the Deadpool 2 movie where Deadpool mimics the famous painter's videos. Throughout the show Stranger Things, there are multiple references to the E.T. movie.
